Let’s be honest: the words “dad” and “fashionable” don’t always go hand-in-hand. Forget about the somewhat dumpy image of fathers that was recently propagated by the “dad bod” craze. That’s more about physique. But where clothing is concerned, a lot of dads have a reputation for dressing a little blandly or carelessly when they’re not at work. It makes a certain sense. Parents in general are often too busy to worry too much about their wardrobes, and weekends and evenings away from work are the perfect excuse to not care at all about what you’re wearing.
With that said, most of us would still prefer to look cool, even if we might not admit it or make a huge deal out of it. So below, I’ve put together a few simple, good-looking ideas for dads to consider heading into the summer.
Suit Up In Stripes
I’m not personally a huge fan of striped clothing – there’s something a little loud about it – but that’s not to say it’s always wrong. And if you have succumbed to the “dad bod,” it’s worth noting that vertical stripes tend to do a lot to help slim you down visually. At any rate, this slideshow of mostly ridiculous men’s fashion from spring and summer runways points out that vertical stripes happen to be trendy this summer as well, so why not hop on board? Just don’t mimic the specific looks on that slideshow…Some looks are best left on the runway.
Wear Toned Down Polos
Any guy can pull off a polo, but too often we see summer styles embracing bright, bold coloring. That’s fine every now and then, but the best look for a dad is often to be stylish, but also somewhat low-key. Loud fashion is for the young and single. Fortunately, this summer even the trends don’t seem to be all about bright colors. This site has some really nice ideas for color combinations designed for polos that provide a cool, laid-back image rather than a gaudy one. The basic idea is to embrace blues, greens and whites, and polos like the ones shown there are ideal for everyday casual wear.
Embrace Strapped Sandals
If you’re like a lot of other dads, this may be your favorite trend you’ve ever heard. According to this site and other fashion previews for the months ahead, strapped sandals are, miraculously, back in style after lighter and more casual flip-flops have been in the lead for years. This is great for dads because casual flip-flops just aren’t always practical options for us. When you have a kid and you go out for a summer afternoon somewhere there’s just so much walking, carrying, and general wear and tear that sturdier, strapped sandals are usually the more convenient options. And now they happen to be on trend as well. Big win for dads.
Go For Low-Key Accessories
Let’s get one thing perfectly clear: you don’t want to be the dad who blatantly looks like he thinks he’s 20 years younger than he is. That means not going nuts with fashion accessories. But one or two small things can actually provide you with some of that youthful look without making you appear silly or out of place. For instance, a small leather bracelet can look good on a man of any age, and no one ever disliked the look of a nice watch. A few little touches like these show that you care about your appearance but still don’t feel overboard.
These are just a few ideas to consider as we head toward the summer season. There are many more men’s trends to consider, but these suit the season and the needs of dads everywhere!
